Thames
River Jigsaw Puzzle
Jigsaw puzzles are fun to solve and this great photograph of the river
Thames at London makes a very good study to cut into a jigsaw.
The Thames River
flows for roughly 346 kms beginning near the village of Kemble and flowing
through London to eventually reach the sea at Southend. In days gone by
it was used as the major highway, transporting goods and people around
England and overseas.
Did you know that pollution became so bad in the Thames River that in
1858 the Government could not sit in the House
of Commons due to the great smell emanating from the sewerage that
entered the river. This period became known as the "Great Stink"
and precipitated major sewage works.
The River Thames became a dead zone because of all the pollution and
it was not until after the second world war that the river usage started
to abate. The major shipping port is now downstream at Southend,
and the river only sees an occasional cruise boat or pleasure crafts.
Today the river is returning to life after massive clean ups. Fish and
other aquatic animals can again be seen and the Thames is looking and
smelling so much better. In January 2006 a northern bottle-nosed whale
was spotted in central London. Unfortunately the whale was confused and
injured, causing it to die during rescue attempts.
