Victoria Falls is a massive one mile long waterfall on the Zambezi River that drops into a deep gorge and causes a mist that rises like rain going the wrong way, up instead of down. The Local people call it "Mosi-oa-Tunya" -- the smoke that thunders. Did you know that the first European to see Victoria Falls was David Livingstone on 17 November 1855, yet archeologists have uncovered artifacts and stone tools from the area which suggest that man has lived near the falls for 3 million years.

Normally waterfalls are found in mountains but the Victoria Falls is located on a flat plateau extending hundreds of kilometres in all directions. The ground has split open making wide chasms into which the Zambezi River drops and the area where the falls are now will probably change in years to come as the pounding water causes the soft basalt plains to split again. This is deducted in the zig zag series of gorges downstream from the water sheet of today and scientists believe that there is a new crack being formed at the western 'Leaping Waters' section of the falls.
