Did you know that Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay was originally the site of a lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1853 and served as a beacon to many ships sailing into the harbor in the goldrush days. Later it was also a site for a military installation and prison. Today Alcatraz Prison is abandoned and serves as a tourist attraction.

Alcatraz was first used as a federal prison in 1934 and for 29 years held some of the most dangerous American criminals, including Al Capone. The prison was closed in 1963 due to the high cost of running the establishment and pollution problems it was causing to San Francisco Bay.

During the time it was used as a federal prison there were no recorded successful escapes from the prison known as "The Rock".
