Did you know that the gorillas you see in zoos around the world are Lowland Gorillas, now called Western Gorillas and that there are about 10,000 of this species left in the wild with another 750 in zoos. The most endangered species of gorillas is the Cross River gorilla, found only in a small area of northern Nigeria. There are only around 100 to 150 of these gorillas left on this planet.

Just like humans, gorillas are pregnant for nine months before giving birth to their young. Young males are called blackbacks and are usually driven away from the troop when they reach maturity around 8 years of age. Young adult males sometimes form bachelor groups until finding their own females to mate with.
