Echidna
Jigsaw Puzzle Game
The Echidna of Australia and New Guinea is an animal similar in looks
to a porcupine or spiny ant eater, where they have sharp needles on their
backs to defend themselves. The echidna rolls up into a ball when threatened
so that their belly is protected.
Echidnas are mammals yet lay an egg to have their young. The only other
mammal to lay an egg also is the Australian Platypus, so they are a pretty
unique animal. When the egg is layed it goes straight into the mothers
pouch for hatching, which takes about 10 days. The baby echidna is called
a puggle and lives in the mothers pouch suckling milk until it grows
needles on its back.
Echidnas eating
habits consists mainly of ants, insects and termites, with the occasional
earthworm for a well balanced diet. They rip apart dead logs and branches
seeking out the termites, and dig into ants nests where they use their
long snouts to gobble up food with their long sticky tounge.
Echidnas are very shy animals and live solitary lives, only being with
another echidna at mating time. If you are carful, they are easy to pick
up, but you should wear protective gloves as the needles can give a sharp
sting and cause local infection. Only handle echidnas in the wild if they
are in danger, putting them into a bag is the best way to carry them from
danger. Echidnas generally will not scratch and have no teeth to bite.
