The Mystery of the Mary Celeste Review
The original Mary Celeste was a merchant ship that has become
one of the worlds greatest maritime mysteries. In 1872 she was
found floating in the Atlantic Ocean, with full sails intact but
the entire crew had disappeared. All the cargo was still on board
and all the crews personal belongings were still in place. It
seems the crew just vanished from the face of the earth, and to
this day no clues as to why they disappeared ever came to light.
The Mary Celeste is a true ghost ship story.
This
sets the scene for a true mystery thriller, and what could be
better for a spooky hidden object game than the story of the Mary
Celeste.
In The Mystery of the Mary Celeste, you play as Mary Morehouse,
who boards the Mary Celeste II for it's maiden voyage. The Mary
Celeste II is an exact recreation of the original ship. As soon
as the boat sets sail, mysterious occurrences begin to unfold
and you must uncover the answers to the mysteries or be doomed
like the original crew.
While The Mystery of the Mary Celeste may not be the best hidden
object game ever created, it does have some pleasing aspects and
is well worth the effort of giving this a trial run. Graphics
are good and they set a spooky mood for the entire game. Some
of the objects to find can be small on older monitors, but if
you have a good size resolution, small objects are not a problem.
Music is set to a nautical theme and doesn't intrude on the game.
The hint system is generous. Objects are kept in theme with the
game, which is very refreshing.
Perhaps the biggest downfall of The Mystery of the Mary Celeste
is the overall length of game play. For some, especially experienced
HOG fans, they may breeze through the game in around 2 or 3 hours.
You move back and forth through time, thanks to a mystical amulet,
going from the Mary Celeste II to the original ship in order to
collect clues and solve puzzles. Mini games are fairly easy but
there are a few of those "untie the knots" games.
The Mystery of the Mary Celeste has a great story line that keeps
pushing you to the finish. Compelling may be too strong a word
for the game, perhaps interesting enough to want to see the story
unfold. The ending, well it was a bit of a let down, but I'm not
going to spoil it for you. There are eight chapters in the game,
with the last chapter being the longest.
To sum up, The Mystery of the Mary Celeste has great graphics
and a solid story which follows the history of the original Mary
Celeste closely. Of course the game writers has used imagination
to create a spooky ghostly feel, with writers license to include
time travel between ships. Use of the amulet is overdone, but
the game has enough substance to get a 4 star from 5 rating. Place
The Mystery of the Mary Celeste in your "worth trying"
list.
