At the very beginning, click on the bushes that are on the left side and look for the list of hidden objects. Once you have the list you will be given a wrench. Use the wrench on the doorbell in the next scene. You can always just smash your way into the house if you can't figure out the doorbell puzzle.
The book will give you clues as to where to look for certain things or what to do with them once you get them. You can always flip through the book as much as you want so you can look through the clues.
