Island Realms Game Review

Making a good change from the many hidden object games that have been released recently, Island Realms is touted as a time management game but could easily be placed as a strategy game or a resource management game. Whatever way you look at it, fans of the old classic PC game, The Settlers, will prick their ears up on this game, with another step in the casual game industry taken toward bridging the gap between the large PC epics and downloadable casual games.

Island Realms takes you into the lives of a band of merry sailors who have been shipwrecked and washed ashore on a very interesting, and seemingly endless, chain of tropical islands. Your not the only inhabitants on these islands, so to survive you must work hard to gather resources, make trades at the local store and buy and sell goods and resources to ships that call into port. Your task is to gather resources and populate each island in the group. You need to buy a permit from the local store to be able to jump to the next island, so gather those resources and multiply. Sounds easy, yet life wasn't meant to be that easy, as you will find out.

You produce your goods by developing mills and quarries, then you trade goods for coins or blueprints to upgrade buildings, at the local store. You need to train your men to build roads and work the various resource gathering enterprises, upgrading the mills and hiring extra workers as required. There are some inhabitants, who to say the least are not your friendly neighbors and they will make life miserable by stealing your goods, wrecking your roads and performing just like an enemy does when 2 different cultures have opposing views to life. You need to build defenses to battle this enemy, so you can succeed in your quest.

It does take time to figure out the best strategy to take you from island to island, as the lack of a tutorial doesn't clearly show you exactly how to tackle each problem. But to me, that is one of the better aspects of the game, as it makes for a challenging, although sometimes frustrating game, figuring what is the best way to get from one island to the next. You can play each level as many times as you like until you get your strategy right.

Island Realms is a challenge and as such a good addition to anyone who likes the time management game genre. It is from the makers of Farm Frenzy, and if you have played that you will know that the quality is high, with the difficulty level also on the high side. Highly recommend this game as one that will test you to the max with great replay value as you chase the fruits of life. Have fun with Island Realms, as there are many moments within the game that will give you a good laugh.
