Pakoombo Game Review
With
an unusual name, Pakoombo steps into a well loved game genre in
a bright and breezy match 3 romp on a tropical island setting. Playing
as Cathy, the local heroine, your task at hand is to help stop Mr.
Lyar, a greedy land developer from taking and selling your fathers
small seaside hotel resort, which would see you, your siblings Stewart
and Leo, and your friends, dumped on the beach with no where to
live. You have a map that should lead you to lost treasure, but
it won't be easy as there are ancient spirits, and other unmentionable
creatures, that will attempt to guard the treasure at all costs.
Find the treasure and save the hotel from Mr. Lyar.
This leads you into, what is at first, a dazzling game in typical
match 3 fashion. Unfortunately the longer you play the more repetitive
it becomes, and you go back and forth between locations. There are
3 different game modes, Story mode, Quick Play and Boss Battle.
Story mode is perhaps where you will spend most of your time, talking
to a range of colorful animals, various characters and stomping
through the island toward a thrilling plot to save your home from
the greedy Mr. Lyar.
You work your way through the game by playing usual match 3 tile
type scenarios. Swapping tiles to make matches and attempting to
position tiles so you can create combos, which in turn reward you
with more coins to spend on upgrades. Pakoombo has many upgrades
that will help you battle "boss" enemies and there are
challenges that make you plan your moves in advance to overcome
obstacles. This is a nice refreshing twist to the usual repetitive
match 3 game, bringing in the need to lay down strategy several
moves in advance, actively involving the player in choosing powerups
and laying tiles to block the opponents moves.
While graphics are cartoonish, they are very colorful and the bright
and breezy music adds a tropical atmosphere to the game play. Pakoombo
does have some irritating features such as the voice over yelling
"Pakoombo" every so often.
Pakoombo should warm the cockles of match 3 fans hearts, but if
your not a true believer, the repetitive side, and the continual
looping catchy music, may test your resolved after a few hours.
This is well worth downloading the demo version and giving it a
trial. Pakoombo is a welcome change for us reviewers, after a run
of hidden object game releases, but it is you, the paying publics
opinion that counts. Give the demo a run and see if this is a match
3 made in heaven. The kids should love Pakoombo as the graphics
are cartoonish and the characters look like rejects from old TV
series.
