As a hidden item game, Joan Jade and the Gates of Xibalba is a good mystery hunt with about a 4 to 5 hour time frame for those of normal game play talents. Search for hidden items in dense jungle setting. This game is outstanding for all who enjoy a good puzzle challenge mixed with some hidden item scenes.

The storyline is very engaging, but it can be skipped if you don't like to read during a game. There are actual facts interwoven by way of the notes in your journal that makes the story quite interesting.
A feature that can be very helpful is that mini games come with hints, so instead of skipping these games when stuck, you can play a hint and work through the puzzles.
There is no timer, the graphics are simply beautiful, the objects are cleverly hidden, but not that hard to find where they just cannot be found, and hints are unlimited after recharging. The mini-games are wonderful, with a fabulous variety. The instructions for the mini-games are clear, with easy access so you can review the instructions where needed. All the hidden objects you need to find make sense to the setting and many are necessary for the interactive portion of the game.
The story is that Joan Jade, an archeologist, has stumbled upon something of great value in the jungles of Mexico. Joan's children have been kidnapped by thugs, who apparently will hold them for ransom, taking whatever you find in the ancient Mayan ruins for themselves. Free your children and also save the ancient treasures for science. Search the dense jungle and Mayan temple for clues, solve baffling puzzles and use items to open doors that will lead to your successful quest.
Is Joan Jade and the Gates of Xibalba destined to be hailed as one of the classic hidden item games? This review doubts it very much, but does give the game the thumbs up for those who enjoy a not too difficult hidden item hunt. Certainly not the worst game out there.
