What is a Domain Name

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a unique address to a particular website, just like your home street address. Internet users type in the address (addy) and this takes them straight to the required website. Our domain name for this website is www.itexpressions.com

Years ago websites used numeric numbers, or IP addresses, to guide users to their websites. Nowadays, instead of long numeric IP addresses, domain names are used to identify and link to web sites.

The governing body which allocates domain names is ICANN. A domain name is allocated a numeric IP number and both the IP address or the www domain name can be used to view the website.
